III-V Epi CTO, Richard Hogg, joined Aston University in spring 2023 as Professor of Photonics at the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AIPT). Aston University has a long tradition of inviting new members of its academic team to deliver free, public lectures, the ‘inaugural lecture’ series, sharing their expertise and knowledge with interested members of the public. Professor Hogg is no exception, delivering his lecture “Reinventing the Laser Diode” on Tuesday 28th November at 18.30 at the Susan Cadbury Lecture Theatre, Aston Business School.
Professor Richard Hogg explains, “The laser diode is 61 years old this month. Few people outside of the photonics and electronics industries realise just what a significant invention it has been. Laser diode technology already enables many of the world’s high-growth technology applications and markets, including datacoms, telecoms and data storage; the internet and digital economy; high-power cutting and welding; sensing and imaging; defence and security. The lecture will cover the different classes of laser diode available; how they work; fabrication techniques; the material systems used; the wavelengths of light produced; and what applications each type addresses now and in the future.”
Professor Hogg has extensive post-doctoral experience in compound semiconductor technologies, spanning research, development, and manufacturing. He has been responsible for developing epitaxial processes, device designs and system applications. These include quantum dot devices, quantum cascade lasers, resonant tunnelling diode THz emitters, super-luminescent diodes, and photonic crystal surface emitting lasers (PCSELs).
